NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. The scheme was launched on September 24, 1969, by the then Union Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao in 37 universities covering all States. Since then, 24 September has been designated as NSS Day commemorating its foundation.

As per the motto of the NSS – “NOT ME, BUT YOU” – an NSS volunteer is supposed to place the ‘Community’ before ‘Self’. NSS provides opportunity to the students of schools, colleges and universities of India to take part in community service programmes. NSS was introduced in academic institutions on a voluntary basis to establish a linkage between the Campus and the Community outside. The NSS scheme orients the students to develop a sense of social responsibility and help them grow individually and also as a group.

The logo for the NSS is inspired by the Rath Wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa, India. The eight bars signify the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a small part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind. The red colour is the colour of blood. It indicates that the young NSS volunteers are active, energetic and high-spirited.

Objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS):

1. Understand the Community in which the volunteers work
2. Understand themselves in relation to their community
3. Identify the needs and problems of the Community and make efforts to solve them
4. Develop a sense of social responsibility
5. Develop competence for Group-activity by sharing responsibility
6. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
7. Practice national integration and social harmony
